The Cape Town International Jazz Festival
We’ve listened to our fans and we think we’ve got an even more exciting – and crowd-pleasing – festival. After all, it is called ‘Africa’s grandest gathering’. – Rashid Lombard, festival organiser
The festival, now in its 15th year, is being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. There are five stages, with more than 40 artists performing over the two nights.
Says festival organiser Rashid Lombard: ‘We’ve listened to our fans and we think we’ve got an even more exciting – and crowd-pleasing – festival. After all, it is called "Africa’s grandest gathering".’
The line-up of international artists includes Erykah Badu (US); Kirk Whalum – the Gospel According to Jazz (US); Level 42 (UK); Shakatak (UK); the Kenny Garrett Quintet (US); Rakesh Chaurasia and Friends (India); Carmen Lundy (US); the Mike Rossi Project (US); Tasha’s World (Netherlands); and Moh Dediouf.
Representing South Africa are, among others, Abdullah Ibrahim; the Shape of Strings to Come (Jimmy Dludlu, Alvin Dyers, Richard Ceasar and Saudiq Khan); Dr Philip Tabane and Malombo; The Soil; Mi Casa; Jimmy Nevis; and Matthew Gold.
The run-up to the weekend of 28 and 29 March has seen some festival events taking place. These included a free concert that took place on 26 March at Greenmarket Square. Numerous workshops have already taken place in and around the festival, while masterclasses and further workshops will take place over the next two days.
‘This festival is now far more than just two days of music. We hold a variety of events and programmes that expand the love of music among the broader communities of Cape Town and develop musical talent and other skills in the South African music entertainment industry,' says Lombard.
A popular element of the festival programme is the Duotone Photographic Exhibition. This year it explores two themes: 15 years of the festival, and the life and times of Nelson Mandela.
The event is an absolute must for any music-lover; it’s not surprising that tickets are sold out.
