Cape Town International awarded Best Airport in Africa
We constantly review and revise our processes to ensure we are able to deliver a seamless passenger experience. – Deidre Hendricks, Communications Manager, Cape Town International Airport
Cape Town International Airport was recently awarded Best Airport in Africa and Best Improved Airport in Africa by the Airports Council International (ACI) in its 2010 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Global Awards.
Cape Town International is among 3 South African airports that made it into the top 5 Best Airports in Africa. Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport was named 3rd best airport in Africa after Cairo International, while Durban's King Shaka International Airport came 4th, followed by Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
George Airport, also an Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) airport, was named Best Airport in Africa in the Fewer than 2 Million Passengers category.
The ACI is an independent organisation that benchmarks the global airport service industry by conducting surveys to test overall passenger experience at airports across the globe.
In 2010, over 300 000 passenger surveys were completed at participating airports and served as the basis for determining the top 5 performers in each category – worldwide, by size, by region, and best improvement by region.
Cape Town International is currently ranked at 37th out of 150 airports by the ACI. The airport scored particularly high in the areas of parking facilities, value for money, trolley availability and cleanliness, and was rated better in these areas than its competitors (those airports in the same volume category – 5 to 15 million passengers per annum).
Areas that need improving, according to the ACI, are Internet/Wi-Fi access, ground transportation and ease of finding your way.
Deidre Hendricks, Communications Manager at Cape Town International, says the airport has a keen focus on customer service.
'We constantly review and revise our processes to ensure we are able to deliver a seamless passenger experience,' she says. 'Our customer initiatives include programmes such as SA Host training to ensure all staff deliver a quality service to airport users.'
She added that awards such as these showed Cape Town International was on the right track and indeed a world-class airport.
'We are extremely proud of the award and will continue to partner with all members of the airport value chain with a view to constant improvement.'
