The awards play a key role in building a positive profile for the hospitality sector in the region - Mmatšatši Marobe, TBCSA CEO.

The HICA Business Awards will be presented at the Hotel Investment Conference Africa (HICA), which takes place from 9 to 11 May 2012 at the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel in Durban.

The awards aim to recognise organisations and individuals who make an extraordinary contribution toward the sustainable growth of the hotel and wider travel and tourism industry in sub-Saharan Africa.

'This year we return to our previous format of presenting awards in 4 main categories,' said Mmatšatši Marobe, CEO of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA).  'We are especially excited about the inclusion of a new award category that recognises the role of hotel interior design and architecture.'

Nominations can now be submitted for the Design and Architecture Award, Excellence in Travel and Tourism Reporting Award, Business Leadership Award and the HICA Investment Award.

The HICA Investment Award comprises 2 sub-categories: one focused solely on hotel accommodation and the other on other accommodation types such as lodges, guest houses and bed and breakfast establishments.

Marobe is calling on the industry to support this initiative by nominating their preferred candidates.

'The awards play a key role in building a positive profile for the hospitality sector in the region. It is essential for all industry players to continue supporting the awards as we need to celebrate the good that is being done, and not only focus on the challenges,' she commented.

The HICA Business Awards are adjudicated by Grant Thornton and have previously recognised industry leaders such as Clifford Ross (CEO of the City Lodge Hotel Group), who won the 2011 HICA Business Leader Award, and Kate Els (former trade journalist and now SA Tourism E-marketing's Content Editor), who won the Excellence in Tourism Reporting Award in 2009.

All tourism businesses in the sub-Saharan region are eligible. The deadline for nominations is 23 March 2012. To find out more about the criteria for the award categories and to download the nominations form, visit the HICA website.
