Maritzburg Golf Club is the second oldest golf club in South Africa.
Champagne Sports Resort is constantly ranked among the top golf courses in South Africa and is highly recommended for anyone looking to spend some time in the northern Drakensberg. While this is arguably the region’s flagship course, there are many others to try out.
In 2008 Mooi River’s Gowrie Farm came full circle by returning to its 1920s golf course status. The design of the nine-hole, par-71 Gowrie Golf Course was influenced by the old courses of Scotland and the early 1900s courses of the United States.
Set in the Drakensberg foothills, the Mooi River Country Club boasts an 11-hole, 18-tee, par-72 course that’s been described as one of the most beautiful courses in the Midlands. A bar, full menu and reasonable fees make this an appealing family destination.
With an elevated 6th hole known as Thrombosis Hill, the Glengarry course – on the Drakensberg Gardens Hotel grounds – is set to challenge all comers. The panoramic view of the mountainous surrounds is a fair exchange for the demands of some seriously undulating holes, water hazards and trees.
Sakabula Golf Club is a fenced, 18-hole, par-73 course featuring two totally different sets of nine holes, akin to playing two separate courses. You’ll find Sakabula 15 minutes’ drive from Pietermaritzburg in a relaxed rural setting.
Built in the early 1960s, the 9-hole, 18-tee, par-72 short Bosch Hoek Golf Estate in Balgowan winds around a lake, dams, streams and ancient trees to provide a challenging course. With water features on seven holes, abundant birdlife, indigenous surrounds and good, old-fashioned country tranquility Bosch Hoek invites Midlands travellers to stop in for a quick round. A strategically situated clubhouse overlooks the course and provides a welcome oasis.
In Pietermaritzburg you’ll find the Maritzburg Golf Club, built in 1886. This course boasts lush, smooth cynodon greens and fairways lined with pine trees.
Just outside Pietermaritzburg the postcard-pretty Victoria Country Club invites golfers to a safe venue adjoining the Queen Elizabeth Nature Reserve. Over the years the parklands and grasslands of this meandering course have attracted many wonderful birds.
