Yoga in South Africa

Yoga is very popular in South Africa. If you’re visiting the country and need a fix of your regular yoga class, make contact with various organizations that can put you in touch with a teacher, class or school in the area you are visiting. The BKS Iyengar School of Yoga has classes all over the country (www.bksiyengar.co.za), or make contact with The Yoga Teacher’s Fellowship (www.ytf.co.za).

If you’re in the mood for a retreat that combines yoga and a beautiful soulful destination, there are a few options on offer. The South African Yoga website (www.southafricanyoga.com) offers retreats for 2010 in the scenic Free State province, the Clara Woodburn from Yoga Warrior (www.yogawarrior.com) has a number of retreats on offer year round. Bookings are already filling up for the New Year Yoga Retreat in Tulbagh in the Western Cape.

There are various gyms in and around South Africa including Virgin Active and Planet fitness that offer yoga classes as part of their weekly schedules. For a nominal fee you can use the gym and attend the various classes on offer. Various retreat centres also offer yoga as part of their programme including the Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Emoyeni Retreat Centre in Rustenburg.

Some of the country’s top hotels and spas also offer regular yoga sessions as part of their programme.
