Wedding venues to suit all tastes

Every Wednesday night, Twitter is abuzz with the weekly #TravelChatSA, which sees fellow travellers get together for an hour from 7pm to 8pm to chat about their favourite topic. Last night, the chatter was all about weddings ...

Getting married is a highlight in most people's lives, and every couple wants the perfect day. Weather, clothes, menu, cake, invite lists, photographers – a wedding list, it seems, is endless.

A venue and the bride’s dress are often highest on the list of priorities, so it’s good to know that when it comes to venues, South Africa is a treasure chest of perfect wedding destinations.

Wine estates, five-star bush lodges and high-end hotels all got mentions in last night’s #TravelChatSA.

Said Meruschka (@MzansiGirl): 'Beaches, mountains, vineyards and villages – so much diversity in wedding destinations. Spoilt for choice in South Africa! #travelchatSa.'

Meruschka’s point is confirmed when looking at venues across South Africa – couples are spoiled for choice, and almost any kind of wedding imaginable can be pulled off by skilled professionals.

As South Africa is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, we thought we’d round up a few wedding venues that illustrate this beauty ...

Silver Streams, in Bela Bela in Limpopo province, describes itself as modern yet rustic, and promises to treat the bride like a queen. Each wedding is tailor-made for the couple, as the venue does not offer set wedding packages. The lodge is in the beautiful Bushveld and offers indigenous natural rock gardens and abundant wildlife.

For a five-star safari wedding, why not head off to Mpumalanga’s Thornybush Game Lodge?

In the heart of Big Five country near the Kruger National Park, Thornybush is set among along the Manyeleti River, offering wedding parties unrivalled views of the Big Five and beautiful accommodation.

If it’s cosy, elegant and breathtaking you‘re after, then Cathedral Peak Hotel, in the magnificent Drakensberg mountains, is the venue for you. Here you can say your vows in a quaint chapel set against the backdrop of the magnificent Cathedral Peak mountain range. The range forms part of a World Heritage Site.

For a sophisticated city wedding, try Summer Place in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. It is a highly sought-after venue, with magnificent landscaped gardens, towering trees and water features.

The award-winning Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa lies between the Twelve Apostles mountain range and the startling blue of the Atlantic Ocean in Cape Town, and is also a superb wedding venue. It is rated as one of the best hotels in Cape Town.

There are also a host of popular wedding venues in the beautiful Cape Winelands. Stellenbosch, one of the oldest towns in the Winelands, offers a range of amazing venues.

The town has magnificent Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture, complemented by pristine gardens and oak-lined streets. The setting, with its dramatic backdrops, is perfect for wedding pictures.

South Africa’s warm climate and beautiful beaches also make the country an obvious choice for a romantic beach wedding. Cape Town, the West Coast, Knysna and the KwaZulu-Natal coastline all offer interesting options.
