Things to do in the North West province

There’s a lot to see and do in the North West province – it is a great playground for the traveller who wants variety. Think game reserves, adventure activities, great lodges, restaurants and water sports.

Here are just a few of the activities we think you should cram into a quick getaway to the province. Just a few hours' drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, this province is easily accessible by road. There is lots to do, but if you have only a limited time to spend, we have a few suggestions on what to do.

Sun City: The North West province may be landlocked, but it has its own little man-made beach and waves at the Valley of the Waves at the Sun City resort and theme park.

Chameleon Village: This huge Africa arts and crafts mall is a must-see. There’s everything from traditional African masks and beaded jewellery to malachite carvings and, of course, wooden giraffes.

If you are lucky, vendors will show you how to play traditional African musical instruments, like the mbira.

Hartbeespoort Dam: The dam and its surrounds are great for leisure and water-sport activities. This is a popular weekend destination for residents from Gauteng. There are ferry cruises on the dam, a nearby animal and snake park, trips up the Magaliesberg mountain on the Harties cable car, hot air ballooning and plenty of adventure activities.

Spend some time walking through little town of Hartbeespoort – there are some great restaurants, bars and art galleries.

Madikwe Game Reserve: This game reserve is a great place to see the Big Five. There are a number of privately owned lodges in the reserve that are well worth a visit.
