The Pied Piper of Woodstock

With the opening his latest venture, The Test Kitchen, award-winning Cape Town chef Luke Dale-Roberts can expect legions of faithful fans and new converts to flock to him.

Dale-Roberts describes the Test Kitchen, located amid the Old Biscuit Mill in the revitalised suburb of Woodstock as a blank canvas, and intends to use the space for maximum culinary innovation and collaboration.

Discerning diners, who are wary of experimental cuisine, need never fear being treated and fed like lab-rats, especially when the alchemy afoot is by a chef of Luke’s calibre.

Luke is, after all, the former executive chef of La Colombe restaurant at the Constantia Uitsig wine estate in Constantia; and his culinary artistry won La Colombe 12th place in the San Pellegrino 50 Best Restaurants of the World Awards 2010, and gained them the title of Acqua Panna Best Restaurant in Africa and Middle East.

Classic and contemporary French cuisine with Asian influences; and cooking methods that range from very old to very new, make up the epicurean ensemble with which Dale Roberts intends to lure diners to enjoy a casual or more formal dining experience.

Lunch menus at The Test Kitchen will change daily, and feature fresh produce sourced from the Neighbourhood Goods Market, to be transformed into simple, innovative comfort food.

Dinnertime will see the 30-seater a la carte restaurant-menu offering a complimentary appetiser and palette cleanser, as well as a 5-course and 8-course tasting menu, paired with wines from independent local winemakers, and local, artisanal beers.

Alternately, guests can sit at the more casual ‘kitchen bar’ and imbibe the contemporary industrial-chic vibe of the Test Kitchen with its brick walls, exposed oak beams, earthy-toned walls and oiled kiaat wood bar counters, while enjoying one of Luke’s unusual cocktails and individual dishes straight from the open kitchen.

The Test Kitchen encapsulates the best of local and international food trends. Dale-Roberts is a chef who’s committed to having a great relationship with farmers and producers, and using local, seasonal, sustainable produce; while translating the latest technology and techniques into delectable plates of food.

The Piper commences playing on the 24th of November. Quick, follow the crowds…
