Take A Hike

‘Want to improve your memory? Try taking a walk’ is the TIME headline in bold letters. According to this particular online article (31 Jan 2011) new research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) states that taking a walk can increase brain memory. Now, just imagine how effective your brain would be if you take up hiking as a holiday past-time? If you’re visiting South Africa there is no excuse not to take a good long walk, no matter where you are staying there is ample opportunity to get out there and get moving. There are a range of walking and hiking trails available and for some inspiration you may want to consider reading Hiking Trails of South Africa by Willie Olivier (Published by Random House Struik). Willie gives the lowdown on South Africa’s hiking trails and gives handy tips on how to get out there and enjoy yourself. Another great book is Slackpacking by Fiona McIntosh (Sunbird) for those of us who like to go hiking without ‘roughing it’ too much.
