Take a break – you deserve it

September is Tourism Month, and it’s time for us South Africans to take a break – even if it’s just for a day or 2.

Tourism Month is a good time to explore our own backyards

September is officially Tourism Month in South Africa, which means there are travel activities and events planned across all 9 provinces.

It’s a month when us South Africans are encouraged to travel in our own country, and the good news is that the local travel and tourism industry has made almost 2,5-million discount travel offers available.

Whatever holiday experience we crave is available right here on our doorstep, and is easy, accessible and affordable.

These discounts were made available at the Getaway Show at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg (over the weekend) and are available on South African Tourism’s Vaya Mzansi Facebook page as part of the organisation’s ‘Vaya Mzansi It’s Here’ domestic tourism campaign.

From overnight stays in guest houses to special offers on entrance fees to various attractions and reduced rates on tours, it’s all available during Tourism Month. And the Vaya Mzansi team has loads of great ideas on how to spend your valuable leisure time.

Minister of Tourism Marthinus Van Schalkwyk feels that by being tourists in our own country we can better market South Africa as a destination – and he’s right.

And we’ve got permission from the big boss of tourism to go out there and have a blast: 'I would like to encourage all South Africans to go and explore this wonderful destination,' says Van Schalkwyk. 'Go and meet your fellow South Africans, spend quality time with the people you love, and reward yourself with a much-needed break from everyday life.

'Whatever holiday experience we crave is available right here on our doorstep, and is easy, accessible and affordable.'

Tourism Month culminates in the United Nations World Travel Organisation’s World Tourism Day on 27 September, which will be celebrated across South Africa. The global theme this year is, 'Tourism and Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development'.
