South African adventurers on Twitter

South Africa is a land of great adventure and thus home to many great adventurers. Below are a few that I follow on Twitter.

Kingsley Holgate

A massive man, with a massive beard and a massive heart, Kingsley Holgate is one of South Africa’s most famous adventurers. These days his mission is distributing malaria nets to poor parts of Africa that are affected by this disease.

While his quests take him all over Africa, they always start and finish in South Africa, where the headquarters of the Kingsley Holgate Foundation are based.

The above photo of Holgate is courtesy of Afrika Expeditionary Force.

Visit the Kingsley Holgate Foundation website.

Lewis Pugh is an environmental campaigner and extreme swimmer. He has, for example, swum 1km in 1.7 degree Antarctic waters in a ‘Speedo’ and swam around Robben Island wearing just as little.

He’s taken his chances in shark-infested waters during various swims in the Western Cape and continues to test the limits of his human body.

Ryan Sandes

One of the world’s toughest trail runners at just 29, Ryan Sandes lives in Cape Town and does much of his training in the Western Cape.

Able to endure extreme conditions, he’s competed in deserts and he’s competed in Antarctica. Back at home he enjoys much more accommodating scenery and weather along trail routes on Table Mountain and surrounds.

Riaan Manse

Riaan Manse has cycled around South Africa and kayaked around islands like Iceland and Madagascar.

He doesn’t yet have a Twitter account, but he does have an excellent website which he regularly updates: http://www.riaanmanser.com/

Follw me!

My Twitter profile is http://twitter.com/#!/RoyBarford23 and I’d love to connect with anyone interested in South African adventure.
