Rosebank’s secret hideaway

Because I’m travelling so much I’m rarely at home. But the last few weeks have seen me firmly ensconced in my favourite South African city - Johannesburg. Oh yes, Cape Town has the glamour, the scenery and the wine, but we have the vibe, the energy and South Africa’s friendliest people.

So I’ve been catching up on some of our coolest places. And you don’t get much cooler than Clico’s, the classy little 5-star guest house in the heart of Rosebank www.clicoguesthouse.com . Jeanette Schwegman, top SA businesswoman, fell in love a few years ago with the 60 -year-old Cape Dutch house in the leafy, exclusive suburb of Rosebank. And the idea of Clico was born.

She creatively mixes old and new, offsetting original Oregon pine floors with comfy custom-made furniture, antique Moroccan tables with superb contemporary South African art. (Check out Anton Smit’s garden sculptures and Vernon Swart’s evocative nude.) Take your pick of any one of the nine rooms - all individually furnished and decorated.

But… the best is still to come when you taste resident chef Sean Ackerman’s amazing cuisine. Superb innovative cooking is matched with South Africa’s finest wines.

Partners Jeanette and Sean have just added a spanking new intimate and inviting conference centre to Clico - perfect for that small business conference or a family get-together.

By the way, a year or so ago, they also added a blue-eyed bouncing baby boy…
