Riding the dunes in the Eastern Cape

South Africa might not be known for snow-covered mountains and serene skiing, but if that’s what you’re into you can still hurtle down a slope on a piece of wood.

Sand sledding and sandboarding replace one beautiful natural formation with another – sand for snow – as the venue for seeing how fast you can get to the bottom. The main difference between the two activities? With sand sledding you sit, and with sandboarding you stand.

The dune formations in the Eastern Cape provide the perfect terrain for these adventure sports.

Sandboarding and sand sledding are great activities for all ages, and will amuse both novice and experienced adventurers. Sand dunes are one of south Africa’s lesser-known beauties, and sandboarding or sledding is a unique way to see and enjoy the landscape.

Sandboarding Sundays River offers sandboarding in the Alexandria coastal dune field near the Sundays River mouth (about half an hour outside Port Elizabeth). The experience begins with a boat ride up the picturesque Sundays River (great for birdwatching). When you arrive at the dunes, professional instructors will help you get comfortable. Sandboarding Sundays River also offers activities such as sand sledding, tubing, wakeboarding and waterskiing.

Addo Sand Sledding is run by the Sundays River Ferry and offers sand sledding in the Alexandria coastal dune field. The ferry takes visitors for a leisurely 40-minute cruise up the river to the dunes. Experienced instructors then help everyone get the sleds ready and make sure that everyone is comfortable on the dunes. Cooldrinks and light snacks are included and the sleds, ponchos and blankets are provided. Full catering can be arranged on request.

Surf J-Bay, best known for its surfing lessons and camps, also offers sandboarding. The dunes are only five minutes’ drive from Jeffreys Bay and Surf J-Bay accommodates all ranges of experience. Snowboarders will catch on quickly – Surf J-Bay describes sandboarding as “like snowboarding at the beach”. Beginners can try out a gentler slope, and those who trust their skill can give the “raging bush run” a go.
