Adventurers coming to South Africa can source all their outdoor equipment locally and depending what currency you normally deal in, you can walk away with a few bargain buys.

Outdoor enthusiasts need at least one waterproof jacket, and at various stores in South Africa you could source a high-quality, locally produced jacket for around R400.

If you ask any South African what the best outdoor equipment store is, the answer will most likely always be “Cape Union Mart.” This franchise has stores in all major cities and stocks an excellent range of local and international products, including hiking boots, waterproofs, jackets, torches, navigation devices, sleeping bags and walking sticks. Visit their website for more information.

Cape Storm is a franchise fairly similar to Cape Union Mart. The products may be a bit more expensive, but their quality is excellent.

Game is a massive nationwide retail chain that has a large outdoor products section.

Sportsman’s Warehouse stores are excellent for footwear and sunglasses in particular.

Fishermen can source equipment through online stores such as Fishing Tackle or King Fisher. There is no shortage of fishing shops in coastal towns, as well as inland areas known for river and dam fishing. At these exclusive stores, you are guaranteed great local advice too.

For most outdoor activities in South Africa, equipment is provided by operators or rented out by establishments on location. Visit the South Africa Tourism website for more information about the activity you are interested in.
