Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction 2011

Every year the Spier Conference Centre in the world-renowned Stellenbosch winelands becomes the hub of the social set that gathers from far and wide - all with one focus: good, better, best - and superlative - wines.

The prestigious Nedbank CWG (Cape Winemakers Guild) Auction annually showcases the finest and most exclusive wines produced by its talented members. These rare, limited edition wines are produced in small volumes exclusively for this Auction.

Exceptional wines with a creative edge and great diversity of styles are the hallmark of the 2011 selection of exclusive wines that will go under the hammer at the 27th Nedbank CWG Action.

“There is something for everyone at the Auction this year which we can only put down to the revised auction selection criteria. This allows our members the opportunity to experiment a little more and try something different from what they normally produce. We have already seen some interesting wines come through, like Grenache and Touriga Nacional, to name but a few,” says Guild Chairman Louis Strydom. He has submitted his blockbuster Ernie Els CWG 2009 for the Auction.

The biggest single buyer at the Guild Auctions for the past nine years, Alan Pick of The Butcher Shop and Grill in Johannesburg, is full of praise for the new selection criteria and this year’s star-studded Auction wines.

I have never seen a wine selection of such high caliber with so many star winemakers before.

“This year, the Auction is going to be big!” he predicts.

The public tasting is held annually on the first Saturday of October - this year on Saturday, 1st October, 9am - and affords bidders the opportunity to buy rare and unique collectors’ pieces from some of the finest winemakers in South Africa.

Two of the 13 exceptional white wines at the Auction, from acclaimed winemaker Bernhard Veller, are an elegant Bordeaux-style white blend, and a superb Sauvignon Blanc.

The philosophy behind the Nitida Aureus 2010 was to produce a true Bordeaux-style benchmark, allowing Nitida’s fines and most expressive Sauvignon Blanc, and their very best new barrel of Semillon to express themselves to the full.

The strong fundraising element to the CWG Auction in the form of a silent auction, consisting of exquisitely packaged, rare and handcrafted wines prepared by the Guild members for this occasion. Funds raised through the Silent Auction are donated to the Nedbank CWG Trust.
