Mountain biking in Africa: Wear helmets!

The YouTube video of established South African mountain biker, Evan van der Spuy, being knocked over by a red hartebeest (antelope) has been viewed more than 11 million times in the last 10 days.

Van der Spuy was competing in the MTB Express Moutain race at Albert Falls Dam near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal on October 10, 2011, when the 150kg antelope knocked him off his mountain bike. He saw the animal running toward him, but expected it to avoid him. Instead, it tried to jump over him, but failed in its attempt to do so.

Van der Spuy suffered concussion and minor injuries. Fortunately, however, he was wearing a helmet, which prevented a far more serious head injury.
