Microlighting: Fly like a bird in the Overberg

At Umshanti, near Swellendam in the Western Cape, you can get a bird’s-eye view of the farmlands of the Overberg aboard a microlight.

Microlight flight over Umshanti

While visiting Umshanti on the Buffeljags Dam near Swellendam recently, I was a little hesitant to take up the offer of a microlight flight.

After all, a microlight looks and sounds like little more than a flying lawnmower.

But after several of my fellow travellers (all bloggers on the #Swellenblog tour) returned with enormous smiles on their faces and lots of adrenalin coursing through their veins, I decided to climb aboard.

Boy, was I glad I did.

First we flew down the Buffeljags River towards the national N2 road.

Below were beautiful green fields and well-tended farms characteristic of the Overberg.

Then we took a turn over the Umshanti resort, a collection of cottages overlooking the dam.

All too soon, it was time to land on what was essentially just a short stretch of farm road.

Just in time to spot fellow blogger, Vagabond Scribe, who was indulging in some strategic shoelace-tying to steady her nerves before taking to the skies.
