You may well have seen them on Animal Planet’s hugely popular Meerkat Manor. Now it’s your chance to visit a meerkat colony and see them in real life.

Just outside the ostrich farming town of Oudtshoorn in the Karoo, once famous for its feathers and ‘feather palaces’ where the ostrich farmers lived it up, you can now take a meerkat tour with conservationist Devey Glinister.

It’s up at dawn and into the desert to sit still and wait for the meerkats to pop out of their burrow. They are habituated to humans but far from tame. A sudden movement from you will have them scuttling down back to safety.

It’s an amazing, unforgettable experience – all you need is a few hours, a love of wildlife and some patience.

So hunker down and make the acquaintance of one of our most endearing little creatures.
