KwaZulu-Natal sports events this winter
KwaZulu-Natal is unquestionably South Africa’s hotspot when it comes to winter sports events. The Comrades Marathon, Mr Price Pro surfing championships and the Vodacom Durban July horserace are some of the bigger events coming up in the next few months, while there is plenty rugby and soccer on the go too.
The so-called winter months in KwaZulu-Natal (May to September) offer excellent weather with day-time temperatures in the mid to high 20s, with little to no chance of rain.
Start making plans to be at the big events this winter:
On Sunday, May 29, 18 000 runners will race some 89km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. Considering that just 34 runners took part in the first Comrades Marathon in 1921, it would be fair to say that interest has increased somewhat.
Get all the information you need on the Comrades Marathon website.
Mr Price Pro
World number two Jordy Smith will return to Ballito to defend his Mr Price Pro title on June 4. Ballito is 30km north of Durban and is known for its decent surf conditions, with average swells of around 5ft (1.5m) and left and right hand breaks.
Visit the Mr Price Pro website for more information.
Vodacom Durban July
It’s all about fashion, it’s all about glamour, it’s all about parties, and the organisers even throw in some horseracing for good measure. The event takes place at Greyville Racecourse on July 2.
Tickets cost R170 and parking is R50. For more information, visit the the Vodacom Durban July wesbite.
Super 15 Rugby
The Sharks are KwaZulu-Natal’s Super 15 rugby team. Visit their website to see when they have matches scheduled at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.
If you prefer a round ball, visit the Premier Soccer League website to find fixtures in Durban or Pietermaritzburg.
