Knysna Speed Festival 2011 coming up

The Knysna Speed Festival, which takes place next month, looks like an event that motorsport fans should definitely not miss.

The event comprises the Knysna Hillclimb, the Knysna Kart Grand Prix, the Knysna Soapbox Derby, the Knysna Slot Car Challenge, the Knysna Motor Show and a golf day at the prestigious Simola Golf & Country Estate.

The main event is the hillclimb from May 20 to May 22. This was first held in 2009 and includes cars produced in various eras from a 1961 LDS Formula 1 car to a Ferrari F430. On the list of drivers this year are South African rally legend, Sarel van der Merwe, former SA Formula Ford champion, Jaki Scheckter and twice World Motocross Champion Jean-Michel Bayle.

The motor show at Knysna High School on May 21 and 22 will provide an excellent opportunity to check out some classic and modern cars.

The kart race will take place on May 13 and 14, partly under lights at the Thesen Harbour Town, which will add to the excitement.

Tickets for the hillclimb are R25 for adults and R15 for children. These are available at the Knysna Tourism offices from April 18 and at the gate on the day. Tickets for the motor show are R10 at the gate. All other events at the Speed Festival are free of charge.

Knysna is 490km from Cape Town and the drive is most enjoyable, particularly the coastal section from Mossel Bay onward. Be sure to book accommodation in advance.
