Horseback adventures by the sea

Fancy a gallop along a deserted moonlit beach? Or a bracing trot through the surf? Or maybe just a quiet amble along the seashore?

Mkulu Kei Horse Trails in Kei Mouth (www.mkulukeihorsetrails.co.za) will put you on the right horse, at the right pace and at the right level for your riding skills. Beginner, intermediate or experienced, Cheryl, the owner of this award-winning venture, will make sure you have the ride of a lifetime.

Saddle up with a group or on your own, you choose, but make sure you book well in advance. Cheryl and her team will tailor-make a ride for you or you can join an existing trail.

Decide on a 2-hour beach ride or opt for a 2-12-night adventure trail into the Wild Coast which will take you into the rolling hills of the interior. You’ll see Xhosa women smoking their long pipes, traditional round gaily-painted huts, little black pigs, cows galore and up to 250 species of birds.

As you canter along the coast, look out for whales and dolphins, fishermen and women in traditional dress combing the rocks for oysters and mussels.

See if you can spot the rare Mangrove kingfisher or colourful Knysna turaco along the secluded lagoons.

If you’ve young adults looking for a worthwhile experience during their gap year, Mkulu also offers a great voluntary programme.
