Herbs, Health and Healing

For many African people, herbs have been synonymous with healing since time immemorial.

Margaret Roberts is the remarkable energy behind the Margaret Roberts Herbal Centre in the North West province, an establishment that has been going for 26 years. The centre is designed to teach visitors all about African herbs and indigenous farming and is known as one of the most beautiful (and useful) gardens in the country.

A sand garden is a good way to de-stress and find some inner peace and how about having a game of chess on the life-sized chess board, just next to the fairy gallery.

Visit the apothecary, the herb garden and the nursery and learn about African herbs. You can also take a walk through the labyrinth or explore the fairy garden, there’s even a chapel on the site. Various workshops are held that will teach you all about organic African farming as well as the value of tissue salts and essential oils. There’s a fantastic shop where you can buy soaps, oils and cosmetic using African herbs and plant extracts and if you’re in need of some sustenance there’s a delightful tea garden as well.

There are also numerous books that you can buy (many of them written by Margaret Roberts) that are great food for the soul and will make excellent gifts for those back home.
