Gorgeous champagne bar Beck-ons

Elegant, intimate upmarket champagne bar in the beautiful Constantia Valley ... sans stuffy, snobby atmosphere.

Gorgeous champagne bar by Graham Beck Wines recently opened at Steenberg Estate in Constantia. The venue is in keeping with international food and wine trends, where chefs, food brands and selected foodstuffs become the focal point of a niche venue.

Expecting a stuffy and snobby atmosphere, I was pleasantly surprised. Gorgeous is elegant, intimate and the staff are professional and friendly without being intrusive. Guests are welcomed on a ‘come as you are’ basis, but I wouldn’t risk wandering in in your beachwear.

The interior décor at Gorgeous is … er, gorgeous. It’s unabashedly upmarket, with subtle champagne-coloured lighting, Vivienne Westwood wallpapering and Tom Dixon lighting above the Carrara marble bar. To my surprise, since the focus of the venue is ultimately what’s in your glass, the glassware is local. I was expecting Reidel or similar.

Gorgeous is a brand-exclusive venue and sells Graham Beck’s award-winning Méthode Cap Classiques by the glass or the bottle, with prices starting at R40 per flute and R200 per bottle. Alternatively, you can try a specific range: the 3-wine non-vintage Graham Beck sparkling wines, the 3 vintage cuvées, or their flagship Cap Classique, Cuvée Clive. I was an MCC bore, and stuck to my beloved Blanc de Blancs Vintage. Executive chef Garth Almazan of Catharina’s Restaurant at Steenberg Hotel has created canapés to match the sparkling wines. Annoyingly, it wasn’t possible to order the Saldahna oysters only.

The majority of guests at Steenberg are international and it was heartening to learn that many are well-acquainted with Graham Beck wines. They loved the venue, which was absolutely buzzing by the time we left, and the retail sales, Gorgeous to Go, which sells the full range of Graham Beck MCC at cellar-door prices, was doing a roaring trade.

Bear in mind if you’re planning a visit that space at Gorgeous is on a first come, first served basis, and there is an age restriction of 18 years (South Africa’s legal drinking age) to enter the bar. Also, if you’re a teetotaller or the DD (designated driver) you’ll be on filtered water as no other beverages are offered at Gorgeous.

Gorgeous is open from 11am to 10pm, 7 days a week.
