Fit in the City

Get to know the Jo’burg inner city from a somewhat different perspective … and get fit at the same time.

Walking tours around Jozi are a great way to keep fit

A new initiative was started last year by inner-city tour company Past Experiences. Fit in the City encourages locals to explore the inner city of Johannesburg as part of their weekend exercise routine.

Open to the public for just R50 per person, it’s a fabulous way to get fit, meet people and explore the city on a Sunday morning.

The route is fast-paced, with the emphasis on walking, but a trained guide will also provide information on local historical and cultural hot spots.

According to the company founder and inner-city tour specialist, Jo Buitendach, the main aim of the experience is to get outside and get fit with other walking enthusiasts while enjoying the atmosphere and scenery of the inner city of Johannesburg.

Says Jo: ‘The main aim is to walk and get to know the city “like a local”, rather than just visiting tourist attractions. It is such a great way to start a Sunday and people have reacted really well to the idea. All they need is comfy shoes and a positive attitude. It’s a way to really get to know the city.’

The route is currently about 5km and takes in Braamfontein, among others, from Constitution Hill and its surrounds. But there are different routes on offer depending on a group’s requirements.

Highlights include walking across the Nelson Mandela Bridge, past the new Gautrain Station and Park Station, and through the mining district, Chinatown and Newtown. The walk also takes in numerous public artworks, stunning graffiti and beautiful art deco buildings.

The route is fast-paced, with the emphasis on walking, but a trained guide will also provide information on local historical and cultural hot spots.

The price is R50 per person, but there is a Winter Warmer special on at the moment – if you book for yourself and 3 friends it costs just R40 each. Meet and park at the Sci-Bono Centre, Miriam Makeba Street, Newtown.
