Experience the thrilling Magaliesberg Canopy Tour

The tour consists of zigzagging down the Kloof, stopping at different platforms.  The 11 platforms are joined by 10 slides up to 140m and in some places 30m.

A couple of weeks ago my friends and I decided to spend the weekend in Magaliesburg, I suppose we were weary of our normal routine. After getting lost and taking numerous wrong turns our 1,5-hour drive turned out to be a 3-hour drive to the area. Nonetheless, we arrived at our destination and a host of activities and great hospitality awaited us.

One of the many activities was a Magaliesberg Canopy Tour. Set in the Ysterhout Kloof in the belly of the stupendous Magaliesberg Mountain range, the canopy tour’s platforms are built against the cliffs and rocks of the Kloof with incredible views. We even spotted a few birds and baboons.

The tour consists of zigzagging down the Kloof, stopping at different platforms. The 11 platforms are joined by 10 slides up to 140m and in some places 30m. The first slide was the hardest, I looked at the distance and it took me a while before I decided to just do it! I went first, not because I was the bravest, but I knew if I waited any longer I wouldn’t have done it. On the third platform my anxiety kicked in, my friends had to do a lot of convincing for me to finish the whole thing. I faced my fears and completed all 10 slides. I must say this was one of the proudest moments of my life.

The canopy tour is a 2,5-hour exhilarating experience. The guides who accompany you will give you a safety brief as well as interesting facts about the area as the tour progresses. Sliding from platform to platform will surely stir up your hunger. After the tour, lunch and refreshments were served at the restaurant. Refreshments are also given during the tour. You will also get a certificate to show that you have completed the tour, which I proudly hung on my wall at the office. For about R450, you get all the equipment, transport to and from the site, refreshments while on tour and lunch after the tour and of course, the thrilling experience. Other canopy tours to take note of in South Africa include ones in the Tsitsikamma, Karkloof and Magoebaskloof .
