Don't Drink and Dive…

I’m staying at award-winning Sabi Sabi safari lodge in South Africa’s top private game reserve, Sabi Sand. Selati Lodge is themed on the historic railway that used to run from South Africa to Mozambique and the lodge’s late Victorian ambience and decadently colonial suites are decorated with old lamps, railway memorabilia and gorgeous Victorian furniture.

After an early morning game drive where we find a leopard dozing over a bushbuck kill, a herd of breeding elephants with tiny babies, three white rhino enjoying a morning drink at the dam, and a small pride of sleeping lionesses, we make our way back to camp.

A snooze is on order after a hearty breakfast. I lie down on my massive 4-poster bed, close my eyes, only to hear a gigantic slurp from outside the open door. I look up to see a huge bull elephant drinking from my plunge pool. We eyeball one another silently and then he continues drinking until the pool is half dry. Then he ambles back into the bush.

So you’ll not only see the Big 5 at Sabi Sabi, you get your own personal elephant too…
