Do it the easy way - Slack Packing in South Africa

Some years ago now I did the Wild Coast Meander in the Eastern Cape - a 5-day hike (more of an amble really) starting from Kob Inn in the north and pottering along some of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in the world to Morgan Bay, 54km south. We stayed overnight in lovely little family hotels, picnicked by old shipwrecks, saw fabulous birds, and learnt about the Eastern Cape’s unique culture from our local guides. One of the best parts of the memorable journey was that we didn’t have to carry our own bags or backpacks - we slack packed.

Slack Packing - A Guide to South Africa’s top leisure trails by Fiona McIntosh (Sunbird) now brings together all the best hikes where you can travel light, soak up the views and the environment while somebody else carries your bag.

It’s a super book which describes lots and lots of trails in detail, giving you useful information as to the best size for a group, how difficult or easy it will be, the distances to be covered and when best to walk. You’ll be spoilt for choice when you look at the tempting photographs.

Mmm…I’m already planning my 2011 walks - what about you?
