‘Chicnic’ time at Mount Grace
If you didn't know it before, you do now – the picnic has been reinvented. 'Chicnics' have replaced the standard garden variety picnic – we're talking delicious movable feasts with all the culinary delights you can, well, fit into a picnic basket...
Mount Grace Country House & Spa, set in scenic mountain surrounds, recently introduced a menu of alfresco picnic options. This innovative dining option is appealing to guests who wish to make the most of a stay in the countryside, be they day or overnight guests.
The mobility of a picnic basket means it can be enjoyed literally anywhere on the 10-acre property – under the trees in summer, alongside a secluded rock pool, or even in-room if the weather is inclement.
The picnics are suited to just about any relaxed occasion – a romantic couple, a large family or a group of sociable friends whiling away an afternoon.
Executive chef Vasti Wilson’s concept is that each picnic basket be a carefully conceived feast influenced by available seasonal produce, including both sweet and savoury treats. The Garden Picnic menu, for example, features classic picnic food such as cheeses, cold meats, quiche and fruit slices. Contemporary touches are added with mini-burgers, wraps and sushi.

The freshest of pastries, gourmet street food and a decadent chocolate platter with home-made marshmallows are some of the delights Wilson includes in the Romance Picnic basket.
The Rainy Day Picnic fare offers hearty soup and home-made bread, pasta, pancakes for dessert and hot chocolate. There’s even a ‘pregnancy safe’ picnic with pasteurised cheeses and healthy options.
The cost of these picnic baskets ranges from R150 to R250 per person.
