Cape Town among world's top 10 most affordable cities

What do Hanoi in Vietnam, Prague in the Czech Republic and Cape Town in South Africa have in common? They’re all on the top 10 list of the most affordable cities in the world, according to TripAdvisor.

Cape Town is famous for its glorious scenery

Looking for an affordable holiday in one of the most scenic cities in the world? Then Cape Town would be an excellent choice, according to the international TripIndex Cities 2014 destination list.

Cape Town is listed as the sixth most affordable international city on the 2014 list, just after Sofia in Bulgaria and ahead of Mumbai in India.

Other cities to share the honour of being the least expensive destinations in the world, according to TripAdvisor, are Hanoi in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia, Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt, Bangkok in Thailand, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Prague in the Czech Republic and Budapest in Hungary.

By contrast, the top 10 most expensive international cities in the world in 2014 are London, Paris, New York, Stockholm, Oslo, Zurich, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Toronto and Sydney (in that order).

The survey is based on one night's accommodation in a four- to five-star hotel, cocktails for two (the average cost of two martinis at a top-rated hotel), dinner for two (including two courses and a bottle of house wine) and a return taxi ride.

Prices were measured in local currency between March and May 2014 and converted into US dollars on 31 March 2014.

The cost in Cape Town came to a total of US$190.41, compared with London's US$519.86 for the same experience.

Just another good reason to book that long-haul flight!
