Breathing easy in Irene
Nestled in the quiet Pretoria suburb of Irene, Irene Country Lodge is without a doubt a gem in the Gauteng province.
Driving out of bustling Jo’burg on a Friday afternoon can be quite harrowing for an impatient driver, but rest assured, by the time you arrive at the lodge, the hour-long drive is completely forgotten as you start to settle in.
The Irene area has always been known for one thing, its Saturday markets. The Irene market is so popular in fact, that visitors from all over Gauteng queue to get through the gates every second Saturday to be one of the first to grab a fresh pancake, view an array of local art and just enjoy a day outside with the family.
The Irene Country Lodge is the complete opposite to a busy market in every way. Its calm, relaxed atmosphere makes it a great spot to unwind and is ideal for families or couples looking to escape the city. Built on part of an old dairy farm, the lodge still houses its communal areas in parts of the old farm buildings, adding old-world charm to its contemporary accommodations. Rooms are spacious and offer every amenity you could desire. Including an enormous bathtub to soak away any problems you may have brought along for the trip.
Restaurant facilities include the Meadow Green Restaurant and an outside terrace where a variety of meals are served. We particularly enjoyed the breakfast spread; plenty of variety and fresh fare are prepared each morning for guests.
The Camdeboo Spa, just a few steps from the reception area, is a real treat for spa aficionados. Small and intimate, the spa offers a substantial list of treatments for both men and women and includes facilities such as a steam room, sauna, heated pool and gym area.
Irene really is a fantastic destination to get out of the city for the weekend and a great option for travellers flying into Jo’burg and looking for somewhere to spend a few days. You can book directly through the lodge’s website.
