It’s easy and affordable to rent a 4x4 in South Africa – Bushtrackers in Johannesburg is a great place to find out more – and then armed with this very user-friendly new book you can hit the highways and byways of the country.

You don’t have to have a Rambo mentality, although there are some really challenging trails, such as the sensational 8-day Namaqua National Park and |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park route, which takes you over mountain peaks, river cliffs and dry river crossings, through some of the country’s starkest and most beautiful landscapes.

However, if you want to take things more easy, then try a Kruger National Park 4x4 trail of just 48km along back roads with very few, if any, other tourists.

Only 6 vehicles per day are allowed on these trails, which you book on the morning of the trail at the relevant camp.
