A winter warmer at Skoobs
The combination of coffee shop and bookstore is quite the norm here in Johannesburg. But things become very interesting when you add a little twist to your product offering – and Skoobs Theatre of Books in Montecasino proves just this.
Visitors to Skoobs can now enjoy a bowl of soup while reading their favourite book – which will surely keep them warm this winter.
There was a great atmosphere at the launch of Soups at Skoobs on 5 July, as photographers and journos anticipated sampling soups prepared by the charming MasterChef South Africa judge, Benny Masekwameng.
Chef Benny took us through the soups he had prepared: creamy potato and leek soup with a hint of blue cheese; lamb-shin and lentil soup; and a classic Italian minestrone.
The lamb-shin soup, he said, was from 'a recipe I borrowed from my mother, and tweaked the ingredients a bit'.

And the minestrone? 'To keep with the Italian theme of Montecasino, we had to add a soup that originates from there – minestrone,' he said.
Said Rob Collins, chief marketing officer of Tsogo Sun: 'This philosophy of giving our guests multi-sensory experiences, rather than just a visit to an entertainment destination, continues at Skoobs.
'Skoobs is unlike anything South Africa has ever seen, and we will continue to find ways to keep it appealing to all our Montecasino visitors.'
Skoobs comprises a café, interactive gaming section, putting green and Tuscan courtyard to relax with friends. Its upper level has a special atmosphere and ambience, with a Zen garden and upmarket champagne bar with grand piano.
According to Collins, Skoobs is the only bookstore in the country where visitors can enjoy a glass of bubbly while roaming the shelves to find that special book; or where they can enjoy a bowl of soup prepared by the esteemed chef Benny.
A seemingly odd mixture of elements that somehow work together is what makes this place so special. It's a hidden gem inside Montecasino .
