The Comrades Marathon started as a tribute to the South African soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. Since then, it has become a South African long-distance running race of legend and its popularity as an ultra-marathon has spread around the world.
On Sunday 27 April 2014, visitors to Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront swapped their shopping bags for sports kitbags in preparation for the very first Discovery World Triathlon to be held in the Mother City.
The 2014 Two Oceans Marathon takes place on Easter weekend – April 18 and 19. It’s described as the ‘the world’s most beautiful marathon’, and whether you are a runner or spectator, there is incredible scenery and a fantastic atmosphere to enjoy.
It may be off the main tourist routes, but the huge and very beautiful 16 000ha Jozini Dam (or Lake Jozini), which lies between the majestic Lebombo and Ubombo mountains in northern KwaZulu-Natal and borders Swaziland, is well worth a visit.
Nelson Mandela was a keen boxer when he was young and clearly a sports fan. Many of those who met him in this capacity testify to his interest and enthusiasm. Here are a selection of Madiba sporting moments, tweeted by sports stars and their teams in the past week.
