In 2013, just before he turned 13, Daniël Davel requested the following birthday present from his mom: a ‘paltry’ 94.7km on a bicycle. And as one does, mom Mariana (42), without ever having participated in a cycle race or even owned a bicycle, agreed. She bought a pair of cycling pants, borrowed her even younger son’s mountain bike and finished the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge in 5.5 hours. Mom and son took part in support of Popcorn Kidz, a tutor centre for children with special needs.
