Join us for a #MeetSouthAfrica Instawalk in your city!
The 2014 #MeetSouthAfrica bloggers’ trip will see 14 bloggers cross South Africa on three different routes over a period of 10 days, spotting all of the country’s best sites, testing some of our finest restaurants and staying in some pretty spectacular accommodation. They all arrive on 2 May and travel their paths towards the tourism INDABA, happening in Durban from 10 to 12 May 2014.
We’ll be hosting Instawalks across the country for those who would like to join us exploring Mzansi’s biggest cities and play a part in the campaign or meet the international and local bloggers selected to come along and #MeetSouthAfrica.
An Instawalk is a casual walking tour through a selected area that has been planned by a host Instagrammer in each city. The host of each group will show off the city through their own eyes and introduce some of their favourite spaces to take photos to the bloggers and those that choose to join.
We will host three Instawalks – in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The walks will be captured through the @MeetSouthAfrica Instagram account and through the #MeetSouthAfrica hashtag.
Over the course of the next three weeks, the @MeetSouthAfrica Instagram account will also be taken over by a team selected by Mobile Media Mob, which has helped organise the Instawalks in each city. They will show South Africa through the eyes of a group of Instagrammers known for their influence and ability to convey the everyday in their own unique way.
The details for each Instawalk are below. No need to RSVP, just join us on the day – and don’t forget to interact with us on the @MeetSouthAfrica Instagram account or by using the #MeetSouthAfrica hashtag!
Date: Saturday 3 May 2014
Time: 9am to 12pm
Location: Vilakazi Street, Soweto
The Johannesburg Instawalk will be hosted by @RoyWrench and @LeboLukewarm and will explore the streets of vibrant Soweto, starting from the famous Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have been called home by two Nobel Peace Prize laureates – Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Date: Thursday 8 May 2014
Time: 9am to 12pm
Location: Noon Gun, Bo-Kaap
The Cape Town Instawalk will begin at the Noon Gun, with a view over the harbour and Cape Town Stadium, and wind down through the Bo-Kaap area to capture all of the colourful buildings the area is renowned for. The walk will be led by @FernandoBadiali and @ThobanJ, while facts about the area will be detailed by a host from the Bo-Kaap Museum.
Date: Friday 9 May 2014
Time: 9am to 12pm
Location: Durban beachfront and CBD
Our Durban Instawalk will show off the diversity of Durban’s beachfront and central business district. After parking at North Beach, the group hosted by local Instagrammers @andycarrie_on and @dane_forman will make use of public transport to get to the Victoria Street Market to capture the magic of the early traders there, as well as the aromas from the spice market. After a visit to the Emmanuel Cathedral, the group will pay a visit to City Hall and then move towards uShaka Marine World.
We've also compiled a list of IGers in each city who will be invited to join the Instawalks, all fantastic advocates for the beauty that South Africa has to offer travellers.
In addition to these Instawalks, anybody can participate in the #MeetSouthAfrica experience by entering our promotional competition between 1 May 2014 and 7 May 2014. By using the #MeetSouthAfrica hashtag on your photos on Instagram, you will be automatically entered into a competition to win a Canon EOS 700D twin-lens kit, a camera bag and a 16-gig memory card to the value of R14 499; or one of two Manfrotto lens kits for iPhone 5/5s worth R2 495 each.
Photos posted throughout the period using the #MeetSouthAfrica hashtag on Instagram will be shown at a cocktail event in Durban on 9 May 2014, and an overall winner plus two runners-up will be selected as recipients for the prizes. Multiple entries are permitted, but the prize will be limited to one per entrant and no late entries will be permitted.

South African Tourism first instituted its #MeetSouthAfrica bloggers’ campaign in 2013, with the aim of opening up a new form of communication with potential travellers looking for their next holiday destination. The campaign saw over 219-million impressions of the hashtag across various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.
