Heritage and culture with #MeetSouthAfrica

Our first group of bloggers will get a glimpse into the heritage and culture of South Africa and all that is on offer to travellers who want to #MeetSouthAfrica.

Johannesburg, where our bloggers begin their #MeetSouthAfrica adventure

Our first group of bloggers that will #MeetSouthAfrica have a trip full of heritage and culture options planned across South Africa. The group will start off in Johannesburg on Friday 2 May and make their way through Gauteng, on to Bloemfontein in the Free State, and then head down to Durban to meet up with the other bloggers out to #MeetSouthAfrica, finishing their trip at INDABA 2014. This group will also be accompanied by South African Tourism content editor Dale Jooste.

The group all arrive throughout the day and will be transferred to the Parktonian hotel, where they will be staying for the evening. After freshening up, the bloggers who happen to arrive in time for lunch will head to The Wolfpack in Parkhurst to try one of its renowned burgers!

In the evening, there will be a dinner hosted by the Gauteng Tourism Authority at a rooftop venue in the CBD of Johannesburg! The bloggers will get great views over the city, as well as meet other bloggers who have arrived throughout the day.

Saturday 3 May 2014

After breakfast at the Parktonian hotel, our bloggers will all catch a ride across the city towards Soweto. Here, they’ll take part in the first of our public Instawalks, getting the chance to meet other local bloggers and Instagrammers.

After lunch at Nexdor on Vilakazi Street, the group will head towards the Magaliesberg mountain range to check in at Valley Lodge for the evening.

It’s an early start on the third day of #MeetSouthAfrica for everybody! A hot-air balloon ride waits for everybody on the other side of a 3am wake-up call, followed by a delicious breakfast at Valley Lodge. Our first group will then head back to Johannesburg and stop by Little Addis in Maboneng to taste the fare of Ethiopia and to explore this rejuvenated precinct, stopping at Market on Main and enjoying sundowners and dinner at the Living Room.

This group of bloggers will spend the night in the delightfully different 12 Decades Art Hotel.

A decadent breakfast at The Saxon Hotel is waiting for our bloggers to kick off the week in style. There’s isn’t too much time to relax, however, as soon after this our group will hop on the Gautrain and head north to Pretoria. Here they will visit the Ditsong Museum of Natural History, dine at Leipoldt's for lunch, and then spend some time contemplating South Africa’s 20 years of democratic freedom with a visit to the Nelson Mandela statue at the Union Buildings. After a delicious dinner at Kream, this group will spend the night at the Fire&Ice! Melrose Arch.

Tuesday 6 May 2014

Our heritage and culture group will head back to Soweto on Tuesday morning to hop on bicycles and do a cycle tour around the township. This will be a great experience for them, seeing life in the township and learning about the history of the area, as well as sampling some local dishes at lunch.

Our group will spend the afternoon at leisure, because we know bloggers need rest too! But after a relaxing afternoon, they’ll be getting dressed up for dinner and a theatre experience!

After this, they’ll once again spend the night at the Fire&Ice! Melrose Arch.

After breakfast at the hotel, our first group of bloggers will head to OR Tambo International Airport to catch their flight to Bloemfontein. Lunch at the fantastic Seven on Kellner is the first stop in the city, followed by a township tour run by Siyaya Tours and a visit to the Oliewenhuis Art Museum. After this, the group will head to Bella Casa for dinner and spend the night at Urban Hotel.

It’s back to the airport for our group on Thursday as they begin to wind down their trip and head toward Durban. Once in the city by the sea, our group will once again join up with our other bloggers for lunch after a tour of the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The evening will see a reunion of all our bloggers at Spiga d’Oro on Florida Road for dinner.

Our bloggers will stay at the Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani while in Durban.

Friday! The last day of our #MeetSouthAfrica hosting before the start of INDABA 2014. The day will start with an Instawalk through Durban’s CBD and the beachfront, allowing the bloggers to explore the city’s famous spice market and then enjoy lunch thereafter.

Following an afternoon spent at leisure, the bloggers will all head to the #MeetSouthAfrica bloggers' cocktail event to be hosted that evening, where they will also select the winners of our #MeetSouthAfrica Instagram competition.

South African Tourism first instituted its #MeetSouthAfrica bloggers’ campaign in 2013, with the aim of opening up a new form of communication with potential travellers looking for their next holiday destination. The campaign saw over 219-million impressions of the hashtag across various social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.
